We are glad you are interested in practicing talking together with an animal!
To get started, greet the animal and ask if they have time to talk with you. Remember that animals also lead busy lives even though we may not see all that they do. If they aren’t available, check back later.
Introduce yourself and explain why you are reaching out to them: that you are a member of the Animal Talk Coaching Club and learning to better communicate with animals and would appreciate their help. You can ask them any questions you want. Typically they do provide a response. Please share your impressions of their personality, energy, how they feel and any insights they may share with you. By sharing what you get, the animal’s person can provide you with feedback and others can jump in too.
Use the Forum SEARCH field (located at the top of the right column above the picture of the Featured Animal Teacher) to find more discussions involving this animal (or other animals with the same name).
Some conversations have been lively, and we’ve learned some amazing insights, and laughed at jokes. Remember that this is a safe place to practice. This is about practice and learning, it is not about getting it perfect. The animals have much to teach us, to share with us and we with them.

Hi Maddie,
This Barb from the AC group that Mayr has also joined. I am learning how to connect with animals. Can you help? I feel that is something you might like to do? I feel you are such a great companion for Mayr and you get along with everybody.
Maddie: I’m excited to help you! Yes. I calm the others and settle disagreements.
Barb: That is helpful to Mayr I’m sure. Is there anything you enjoy doing?
Maddie: I’m getting older so I do like to sleep.
Barb: I am taking care of a friend named Priscilla who also likes to sleep. She is a very small pup, a teacup chihuahua. I worry that she wants to sleep so much.
Maddie: that can be a job too.
Barb: it is comforting to have her close by and being calm and relaxed. Thank you for pointing out that it is a job.
Maddie: Yes. Some of us need to sleep more than others.
Barb: Do you have a favorite place to sleep in the house.
Maddie: Mayr’s Room. I still like to run around the yard when it’s warm too and I watch to make sure everything is as it should be.
Barb: you have a few jobs then. Anything else you would like to let us know?
Maddie: Forgive and forget. It’s better to be sweet than sour. 😊
Barb: Thank You! Maddie. -

Hi Barb, It’s interesting that Maddie says she “calms” anybody! Ask her who she is calming down and with who she is settling disagreements with? It’s not us! She’s almost 3 yrs old and very lively. She does sleep next to me all day and night, in between her running around! She loves to run turbo around the house or outside. She is very alert with what’s going on in the neighborhood and barks (too much) at neighbors. I’ve included a more updated photo. Good job! Mayr

Hello Mayr,
Thanks for helping me to learn to be more succinct in my descriptions. For me the hardest part is translating the experience into words. Animals are cryptic in their images and feelings.
Calming/Disagreements
She feels that sleeping by you when she is not running around is calming for you.
(Maybe it isn’t?)
Maddie also tunes into your mind and emotions so she thinks she helps you make decisions which I interpreted as settling disagreements like when you are trying to figure out what is next on the agenda etc. or should you go to the store or wash the car or on big decisions. She feels when your actions are not in harmony with what’s going on in your mind…I hope that makes sense….now. -

That is a much better pictures. Easier to feel her young energy. I felt older energy from the other picture maybe because it is not the first time she has been in a dog body….

Thanks Barb, I think you honed in on Mandy’s sleeping, yes it does make sense. She does pick up on my emotions. The original picture of her was when she was a puppy.
Good job! Mayr -

Hello, Thank you so much for sharing Maddie with us to be an animal teacher. I’m unsure if your name is Mary or Mayr??
My general impression of her is that she is very playful, can be vocal, licking her paws, and loves belly rubs.
I introduce myself, and asked if I could talk with her. M: Oh sure. I like to talk! Me: Wonderful, What would you like to tell me? M: I’m a fun loving pup who likes everybody. I have an awesome life and I enjoy living. Me: That’s great. What is your favorite thing to do? M: Just be me, without a care in the world. I know Mayr will take care of all my needs, and I’m secure in that. ME: I’m so glad you are so content. Maddie, you look so soft and cuddly. M: I love cuddles (chuckle). Me: Have you always been with Mayr? No, not always, but for a long time. Me: How old are you? M: I’m 6. Me: Really, you still look like a puppy. M: I age really well! (LOL) Me: You sure do! What do you think about us AC humans? M: It’s amazing. All animals deserve to be heard, and I love it. Me: Aww, you’re such a caring pup. M: Thank you. Me: What can you tell me that can make me a better AC? M: Well, just stick with it. Be kind to yourself and open. You don’t need to learn it overnight. Me: Thank you Maddie. Anything else you’d like to share? M: No, not really, just have fun! Me: Aww, thank you so much MAddie!

Hi Sharon, Thanks for talking with Maddie! You were right on the spot with her! She loves to play all day and night with all her toys especially her big pink ball which she chases and barks at! Funny she says she is Six! She just turned 3 a few weeks ago! Good job! She loves to lick our paws as well as her own. Lol! Thanks for talking to her, Mayr

Hello Mayr,
I am new to the forum and am practicing connecting and talking with different animals. I had the pleasure of reaching out and connecting with Maddie. She is adorable! When I asked if she would talk with me, she said she was busy playing but could talk and play at the same time. She said she loves to play with her toys, especially the squeaky ones. Abd, she likes to run around with them. I asked what she likes to eat and she said chicken, and also that there is a lot of food she does not like to eat. Pets and belly rubs are nice and so is cuddling with you and sleeping close. She is a very happy pup and feels loved in her home. It was great connecting with her and she said she would be happy to talk again. Thank you for sharing her with the group!

Hi Maddie, my name is Hedi. Do you have time to talk?
Yes.Great. What can you tell me about yourself?
I like to bark a lot.Okay, why is that?
I hear strange noises and I want to let mom know. What kind of noises do you hear?
Noises from outside. Loud banging and scraping noises.Do the noises scare you?
Yes because I don’t know what they are.Are you able to look out a window when you hear the noises?
Yes but I still can’t see where it’s coming from.Would it be beneficial for you to see what is making the noises?
Yes definitely. What else would you like to share?
I definitely like all the attention I get. What kind of attention do you like best?
I like it when I get pets and when they play with me.Do you enjoy getting groomed?
No, I don’t like it but I feel good afterwards.Do you like being dressed up and wearing things?
Yes, I don’t mind it.What is your favourite thing to do with your guardian?
Ohh gosh, I love it when we go for car rides and when she gives me treats.Where do you go on the car rides?
Sometimes we go to places I can’t go and sometimes we go to parks. What is your favourite park to go to?
There is this one place that has a lot of smells. Can you describe the park?
Yes, it has trees spaced out with yellow basket things. What do you enjoy doing at this park?
Ohh, I love smelling all the different smells at the base of the trees.Thank you for talking with me Maddie. I really appreciate it and I hope you have a wonderful day.
Oh I want to keep talking. Can you come back again sometime?
Yes, and I will.*** Would love all the feedback you can provide Mayr 🙂

Wow Hedi you did a great job! Yes she LOVES to bark! She does like the big park we drive to. I do ask her not to bark at nighttime because she’ll disturb the neighbors! But she does it anyway. I’d appreciate if you could ask her to not do it once it’s dark outside, we can get in trouble for her barking a lot.
I noticed that lately she’s panting often and the bottom of her feet are wet and I want to make sure she’s feeling ok. She seems to be hesitant to jump up on the couch is her knees, hips or back hurting her??
Please ask her why doesn’t she eat her food? We feed her fresh chicken and sometimes with other things mixed in, today it’s baked potato, Sometimes it’s hamburger, steak, or scrambled eggs with ham, cheese or bacon. Often I have to hand feed her to get her to eat ANYTHING but chicken jerky treats (which is something I try to limit the amount of treats per day). Is there something else she’d like to eat for her meals instead? Thank you for any information you can help me with. Mayr -

Today I spoke with Maddie. What a cutie patutie! She is very outgoing and loves being showered with attention. I introduced myself and asked her if she wouldn’t mind talking with me. She agreed right away and thought it would be fun.
(T) Do you enjoy talking with people?
(M) Oh yes, I love all people. People are amazing and they all love me. They always say that I have such soft fur and I look like a stuffed dog.
(T) Yes you do.
(T) From the bandanna in the picture, it seems that you go to the groomers regularly, to keep up that cute appearance.
(M) Oh yes, I am the favorite at the groomers. They like me the best. Everyone fights over who’s going to groom me versus the other dogs.
(M) They call me a Diva at the groomers. “I want Maddie the Diva” “No, you had her last time”. “Well, I’m going to have her again”.
(M) It’s all in good fun and they are always joking when they are fighting over me and I think it’s funny but I know I am the best one there anyway, so they’re not lying about that! Ha ha.
(T) You’re funny. So you really enjoy your time at the groomers?
(M) Oh yes it is like a spa day. They are very nice.
(T) What else do you like to do?
(M) I like going places with my Mom. I can just jump in the car with her easy. I’m not so small that I can’t get in the car by myself, so that’s great for my Mom. She doesn’t have to worry about bending over, picking me up and stuff. I can just hop in and hop out.
(M) I like car rides because you never know where you are going to end up. As long as we don’t end up at the Vet, I’m fine.
(T) I bet you’re sweet at the Vets too and all the staff love you. They all come by to say hello to you.
(M) I guess that does happen too. I never thought of that.
(T) We have to make sure that you’re healthy. You need to have an exam so that you can continue to greet people and make people smile.
(M) I know but sometimes they give you shots and they hurt.
(T) I know, but it’s only to make sure that you’re happy and healthy for a very long time. Everyone has to go to the Dr. It’s necessary and very important.
(M) I do like my Vet as a person, but I don’t like what he has to do.
(T) That’s understandable.
(T) So where do you like going with your Mom the most?
(M) I like running errands with her.
(M) I don’t like going to the dog park. Dogs are rude at the dog park. I just like going where there are a lot of people because I like the attention.
(T) I could see how that’s a nice outing when people are saying how cute you are all day long.
(M) I can’t get tired of that. I’m a very good girl. I listen to my Mom so it is not a pain to take me places. I’m a good listener.
(T) Well that is very helpful if you don’t behave she would think hard about bringing you places. If you are well behaved, she is happy to take you along.
(T) What else do you like to do?
(M) I like to go on walks sometimes and I like to stay at home and curl up in my special bed, or Moms bed or the couch. I like being in the house too.
(M) I don;t like to go running or anything like that. A lot of dogs run with their parents. No, that’s not for me.
(M) I’m not a ferocious eater. My Mom can leave food down a lot of food all day and I would only eat as much as necessary. I wouldn’t gobble it all down in one sitting but she only feeds me twice a day. She doesn’t leave it down all day long. Some dogs just gobble, gobble, gobble it up and they could get air in their belly for goodness sakes.
(T) That’s not good
(M) I’m very slow. I chew, chew, chew and then swallow. I make sure I bite it into very small pieces.
(T) How about a big question? Can you tell me what your purpose is for being in your Mom’s life? That’s a big question.
(M) Some things are… To keep my Mom company, because she likes to talk to me. I’m someone she can talk to about her day so she can get rid of things that happened during her day. She can just tell me all about it and then when she tells me all about it, she can just forget about it and then we have the rest of the night.
(M) If she didn’t have me, she wouldn’t be able to tell anyone and she would bottle it all up. I’m a good sounding board and I like it.
(M) I also help her to keep her focus. Like on a Saturday, when she has errands to run, or things to do, I’m like her checklist, instead of a piece of paper. She says it out loud to me. “Ok, today we have to do ……”. Then if she forgets, she will look at me and say “What did I have to do next”? Then she puts her head in the air and closes her eyes. “OK we did this and that….Oh yes, thank you, we have to go to the dry cleaners”. Then we hop in the car and go to the dry cleaners.
(M) So I guess you can say I’m like her back up memory. That’s another big job and I like it.
(M) I love my Mom. She has a love of love to give. I’m not the only one she loves, but I don’t feel slighted at all because she has so much love to share. She has love for every single one of us. I like that. I’m not greedy, because she gives everyone more than they could want.
(M) I have a very good life. I’m a happy dog. I just want to continue to help my Mom. That makes me happy.(T). Wow. That was a great conversation. Thank you so much!

Wow! Terrianne, you certainly did a great job connecting with Maddie! She is very attached to me! She’s so funny talking about the groomers as she just recently went to a new place. They did tell me she was a good girl and even kissed the groomer on the nose while she was being groomed! She is not a big kisser of people. She does like to clean her younger sibling’s face (our Boston) or to mend a wound on my husband’s arm and sometimes she traps my hand to clean it thoroughly for some reason. She does like people more than other dogs. She likes to play Tag with me in the house so I’ll chase her and then run away, It probably her favorite game! She does like car rides, funny how she talked about going to the dry cleaners as an example, because I haven’t gone to one in years! If you do talk to her again, please ask her how her back, hips and legs are doing, she hesitates when jumping up on the couch or chair so I want to know if something is hurting her. Thanks for talking to Maddie! Mayr

Hi. Sorry for the late response. As a disclaimer…. I am hesitant to review health issues as my skills are not at a high level as of yet. But… I did speak with Maddie (twice and both times she said the same thing 😳). I asked her if she was having pain in her hind end, feet, etc. I told her that you noticed that she was hesitant when jumping up on to the couch or chair.
She told me that she stepped on something which hurt her foot like a sliver of glass. It wasn’t so bad that she was limping but when she goes to jump on the couch or chair, she has to put more pressure on her hind feet to jump up. So she has to be mindful of where she puts pressure on her right back foot before jumping. She thinks it fell out but her foot is still sensitive. It was her back right foot.
I hope this helps. Terrianne
Post note: about using the example of dry cleaning; I only go to the dry cleaners maybe twice a day 🤷♀️ -

🤦🏼♀️ twice a year!

Terrianne thanks so much for checking on her! I checked her foot but didn’t see anything, I’ll
keep my eye on it. Thanks for pinpointing the area! You’re doing great! Mayr
