One of my favorite exercises I did when I attended Penelope Smith’s Advanced Course was when she passed out a bunch of gaily decorated boxes. Each of us got a box. Our instructions were not to open it, but to instead feel and sense inside the box. Sink into is from a neutral, curious, exploratory point of view. Let ourselves open to concepts, impressions, images, sensations. What was the temperature inside the box? Was the object inside cold or hot or neutral? What color(s) was it? What shape? What material? Was it connected to something in nature, the sea, the earth, the trees, or was it man made? After we had all gleaned as much information as we could. We discussed our impressions and only then were we given permission to open our gift.
It was amazing and gratifying to discover how close our impressions were to the truth!
My gift was a glass bird. It was lying sideways and a bit upside down, so my impression of it was more of a whale shape. At first I felt disappointed that I’d gotten it wrong (whale versus bird) but then I turned the bird over and realized that in fact, in that position it did resemble a whale! I had also sense many colors, a rainbow, and yes, in fact the bird being clear glass acted like a prism.

My experience was so long ago that I don’t have pictures anymore, although I do still have the bird which is one of my treasures.
