Do You Have a Lame Horse But You’re Not Sure Why?

Are You Trying To Figure Out How To Help Your Lame Horse Recover From Lameness or Injury?

If you look back at the lineage of racehorses, you’ll see a distinguished bloodline.

Thoroughbreds – or “hot bloods” as they’re also known – are fascinating, spirited, and intense. They arrived in America from Great Britain in the late 1700s and are a sought-after breed, known for their vibrant personality and competitive, unsinkable spirit.

Because like most horses everywhere, they’re fiercely competitive and driven, and they’re also prone to injury.

Horses are known for powering through those injuries, even if it means enduring pain, to the point of breakdown.

Like any high-performance athlete, they push their bodies to the limit in competition, and they don’t always pump the brakes after they’ve left the racing circuit.

via GIPHY

Such was the case for Ivan, a retired racehorse who found his way home but became lame suddenly for no known reason.

How do you assess and help a horse recover from injury, especially mystery lameness?

When conventional medicine fails the animal and its owner, it’s wise to turn to animal communication. Horses, like every animal on the plant, have important messages to share… all you have to do is listen.

After all, who else knows how they feel, what happened, and what they need to feel better?

Time to get it straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak.

Why was Ivan the ex-racehorse in pain?

Ivan was a lovely, sweet-natured, large bay Thoroughbred ex-racehorse.lame horse 3

His owner, Sharon, knew that Ivan was trying to tell her something… but what?

They’d spent so much time together after she rescued him from the butcher block at auction.

She’d retrained him and ridden him for many wonderful years. There was deep mutual love and respect between the two of them.

But suddenly, he began to limp.

Sharon called the vet. But an examination didn’t reveal anything wrong, and Ivan seemed to recover.  So they went on about their work together.

The very next day, Ivan started limping again. Puzzled, Sharon called the vet yet again, who again checked his hoof, did various flexion tests… they did an x-ray…

Nothing.

And Ivan seemed fine, again.

Days passed, and suddenly Ivan couldn’t support weight on his one leg at all. Deeply alarmed, Sharon called me in frustration.

What was she missing? What was the vet missing?

I came to see Ivan and asked for permission to do a Heart Wisdom MRI intuitive scan…using my subtle intuitive sense to go through his entire body using energy.

What can you learn from a Heart Wisdom Intuitive scan?

Download my FREE Ebook Hidden Secrets to Communicating with Horses – just click on the picture below!

Communicating with Ivan heart to heart, mind to mind, he shared how his hoof would hurt sometimes when he stepped “wrong”, but at other times it seemed fine with no pain.

The pain was sharp and stabbing when it hurt. He remembered stepping hard on a rock in pasture when he was playing, but couldn’t recall anything else that might have made his hoof hurt.

That helped us know that 1) there had been an injury, and 2) the rest of his body was probably fine so we didn’t need to worry too much about other areas just yet.

Then, I refocused to find the root of the problem.

Scanning deeper and deeper through the tissue and bones and hoof wall, I could sense some swelling, a bit of inflammation… I kept going. And then?

There it was…

A hairline fracture in one of the coffin bones.

It’s what Ivan was trying to tell Sharon all along.

When the hoof was stressed with weight or working or the surface he was walking (or trotting or running) on, the bone fracture shifted and stretched, threatening to break altogether. When the hoof was relaxed and at ease, the pain was gone.

To be sure, I scanned the rest of the leg, the shoulder, the neck, hips, back to see anything else that might be contributing to the issue. But the rest of his body was sound.

Sharon again called the vet back out, but try as he might, he couldn’t see anything wrong with the hoof with his equipment.

Sadly, Ivan suffered from the pain of that increasingly bad fracture for another three months before the vet finally could find the injury with his machines.

The problem was exactly where he had told us it was.

By that time, the fracture was so extreme it was clearly visible in an x-ray and Ivan was bad lame. He had been suffering all this time, doing his best to perform even though he was hurting.

I was heartbroken that Ivan had to suffer for so long… but Sharon was grateful that I had exposed the problem, and apologized for ever doubting me.

Horses will power through painlame horse 2

More than any other domesticated animal, horses will power through the pain. And not necessarily because they’re “pleasers” like a Golden Retriever that wags its tail no matter how bad they feel, or your Siamese cat that purrs even though they are sick.

Horses are hard-wired for survival – to run from the lion no matter how much pain they’re in – and they’ll ignore the signs their body is sending them until they reach the breaking point. They’ll develop arthritis, ulcers, inflammation, and yes, hairline fractures and with no one listening to them. Their only choice is to keep going until they can’t continue.

They do try to tell you when something is wrong. Like Sharon, she intuitively felt Ivan was asking for her help, but like many animal owners she didn’t know how to communicate with him. She wasn’t able to understand his messages on her own.

It’s your job, as their caregiver, to watch for those signs.

If you know your horse is suffering but you can’t identify the root of the problem with conventional medicine, it’s time to talk with them or find someone who can.

Animal communication enriches your relationships

Sharon learned from her experience that having a conversation with Ivan would illuminate her understanding of his struggles so she could partner up and help him feel better.

While horses are among the more stoic creatures, they aren’t the only ones who have information to share with us…

Your cat, dog, parakeet, rabbit, ferret or lizard observe the dynamics in your household and have unique viewpoints with much wisdom to share. They are attuned to the energy in your house, and they pick up signals that might be invisible to you.

Take the time to listen to their input. If you don’t know how to interpret their messages, you can enroll in one of our classes and begin discovering how to communicate with animals yourself.

A lame horse opened the window for Sharon to the wonderful world of communicating with animals… and it changed her life and Ivan’s life for the better.

Is one of your pets displaying abnormal behavior? They are trying to tell you something too.

It’s time to learn how to listen.

Moonglow’s Games, Part 3 of Moonglow’s Amazing Story

Once upon a time there was a race horse named Moonglow…

This is part three of her story!

In Part One, I told you how Moonglow went from a super depressed, miserable two year old Appendix filly doing very badly in training, to a successful racehorse who loved the game and found a great deal of joy in racing.

In Part Two, you cried with me when Glow’s knee chipped and she had surgery which ended her racing career.  Saving her from the auction block, she chose to become my horse and together we bravely began our new lives together.

After Glow and I discussed our new partnership, I started looking to find her a good place to live closer to me.  Her former owners let me keep her at Moonglowtheir place until I was ready.  Not having had a horse in my life since I was a teenager, and having no horse equipment whatsoever – we were starting from scratch — I had a LOT of preparing to do!

All her training so far had consisted of basic simple things like being led on a halter, loading and riding in a  trailer, and carrying a jockey in a tiny saddle as fast as she could around the race track.   Because she was basically a wild young racehorse, and I was not accustomed to the art of safely handling excitable, temperamental horses, I decided to start by teaching her games.

Her former owners would just look at me skeptically like I’d grown a third ear, not understanding what I was doing or why.  They often joked that if they left us alone for very long, that when they came back they were sure they’d find one or both of us had killed each other.

At least, I think it was a joke.  Honestly, in retrospect?  I think they worried about us, a lot.

Undaunted, I would go to visit my mare and new best friend.  Excited to see me, she would whinny, calling out to me as I drove up.  She’d head straight to the pasture gate from her spot with the herd.  Then she would stand, perfectly still, patiently waiting for me as I figured out the logistics of the rope, halter and the specific game I wanted to play.  It would sometimes take me so long to get ready that when I finally turned to get her, I’d find her quietly dozing by my side in the Texas heat, even without a halter.

Together we would discuss what game I wanted us to try, and why I thought playing it was important.  She asked questions until she was clear what we were doing.  Sometimes she would tell me the best stories about things that had happened to her in similar situations.  It was awesome!

Our first games I took from the Linda Tellington-Jones TTouch exercises.  I needed her to learn how to be calm and patient no matter what was going on around her.  Anything can happen at any time, so our health and well-being depended on her expertise in coping well with all the various situations we might encounter.  If she behaved badly, spooked or ran away with me (or ran over me!), then we were done and one of us would be badly injured.  I needed her help to keep that from happening.

First, I explained to her that her new job was to keep me safe, and my job was to keep her safe, no matter what.

If I was on the ground or on her back, she had to watch out for me and take good care of me.  To do that properly, we had to be in constant communication listening carefully to each other.  She happily agreed, and away we went.

Moonglow 2

I setup obstacles for her, like the scary blue tarp on the ground, flapping in the wind.  Walking over that wiggly squishy crinkly tarp took some bravery on her part, but eventually she couldn’t have cared less about it.  Smugly she stomped all over it, looking at me knowing she’d conquered it, and then we celebrated!

Then there was the narrow elevated corridor to walk through and back into.  I would ask her to stand while various objects touched her sides and loomed over her head.  She didn’t like enclosed tight spaces, so it took some practice for her to stand patiently while I danced like a monkey around her.

The bicycle and umbrella games?  Those were fun too.  I wish you could have seen us, standing there with all these umbrellas all over the place.  Giggling, I would hold one over her head, they’d roll around beside her on the ground, and even go under her belly touching her legs.   She would look at me like I was so funny, saying “You can’t scare me!  I’m a rock.”

Then there was the maze, a pattern of ground poles to walk through forwards and backwards. Helping her know and feel exactly where her body was at all times was helpful to a growing young horse.  Maneuvering her at my direction through obstacles took a great deal of sensitivity, timing, communication and agreed upon cues to do right.

The pickup sticks star pattern of poles was good too, and it taught her how to manage objects that stuck up as high as her knees.  She had to figure out how to carefully step into, over and through them safely, forwards and backwards.  Wow!  She was so smart, in no time at all she working it like a pro!

The “give me your head” game was a milestone in our training.

She’d always been very high headed, jerking her head out of my reach.  She hated having her ears touched.  I always had to struggle to put her halter on.  I even resorted to climbing up on a stool to reach her.  One day in exasperation I asked her why was she behaving that way.  What she told me made me cry.

Twitching is a technique where the handler grabs her sensitive tender nose and cruelly twists it, or puts a tight punishing bar across it.  Because the pain is so intense the horse can’t explode or move, they tremble in pain so focused on their screaming nose that they forget everything else.  In this way, the horse become easier and less dangerous to handle in the moment.  Glow told me horror stories, and she assured me that being twitched hurt like h*ll.

Impatient handlers had also twisted her ears.  She said her nose and ears would hurt for days after being abused like that.  I promised I would never to do that to her, ever, and I would hurt anyone else who tried to do that to her too.

Moonglow 3

At that point, she sighed and trustingly dropped her head into my arms.  She held very still so I could put her halter on.  And from then on, putting her halter or bridle on was never a problem.

There was the “please carry this for me” game too, which she excelled at even when I put a hat and a rope and a blanket draped over her head.  She just looked at me patiently while I laughed hysterically at how funny she looked.

Then she reached out with her nose and nudged me, saying, “Enough already.  Let’s go play a game that I want to do!  Let’s find some good grass to eat!”  And so we did.

Eventually I discovered a reasonably priced, fairly well run stable closer to me, and the BIG DAY came when it was time to start the next chapter in our lives.  Something truly extraordinary happened the first day she was turned out in pasture with the new herd.  The experience blew my mind and taught me an incredible new technique I still use today to change lives.  I can’t wait to tell you about it!

And that’s a tale for another day…

Race Horse Moonglow’s amazing story, part two (get kleenex!)

Once upon a time there was a race horse named Moonglow… This is part two of her story!

In Part One, I told you how Moonglow went from a super depressed, miserable two year old Appendix filly doing very badly in training, to a successfulmoonglow-part-2-pic racehorse who loved the game and found a great deal of joy in racing.

When ‘Glow’s knee chipped, the owners did surgery to repair it.  Then started her back into training and racing when she recovered.

The bad news is, even though I had carefully explained what was to happen and why, and I had answered all her questions and concerns, the actual surgery was very hard on her.  When she started training again, she told me it felt like she had lost her super speed overdrive gear and could no longer leave the rest of the horses behind in her dust.  It saddened and frustrated her to no end.

So her owners gave up and retired her.  They threw her out to pasture, giving her little attention anymore.  Having what she felt was her purpose taken from her due to her inability to win races, her spirits plummeted.  She lost weight, and didn’t really care about herd politics, so the other horses shunned her. She no longer felt special.

When her owners told me they had decided to put her up to auction, I felt horrified.  By that time, after having working with her for a couple of years and having invested so much of myself into her well-being, I had fallen in love with this wonderful, courageous, spunky mare.

It was clear that she loved me too.

I could do things with her that the owners were astonished to see. For them, she was hard to handle.  She was intelligent, feisty, argumentative, mischievous, high-spirited and a bit wild.

One day as I was talking to her with Sue, one of her owners, standing beside her, Glow suddenly and unexpectedly kicked her in the middle of her thigh!   Glow was in such precise control of her powerful kick that when her hoof landed square in the middle of Sue’s leg, instead of breaking Sue’s leg she only left a dusty hoof print on Sue’s jeans with us in shock, staring at her in astonishment.

Had she used her full intent and power in that second, she could have easily snapped Sue’s leg in two.  I asked her why she’d done that and Glow said she was mad at Sue because her attention was wavering and Glow didn’t like what Sue was thinking.  She wanted to be sure Sue had her full attention, meaning, she meant business and wanted to be treated with respect.  And Sue got the message with just a dusty hoof print as a reminder.

But for me?

Because I, of all the people in her life, took the time to communicate with Glow and really listened to her like she was very important, she felt understood and respected.  She knew that I really “got” who she was.  I heard her heart, she felt mine.  We trusted each other completely.

With me, she was calm, happy, content, cooperative and very sweet.  I always felt safe with ‘Glow, and it was clear that she made an effort to take care of me.  When I drove out to the ranch, she always knew I was there.  She would call to me with a happy whinny. If she wasn’t already standing at the gate waiting for me, she’d head that way before I even got out of the car.  We both looked forward to our visits like kids going to the candy store.

So the thought of her going to auction and being bought by who knows who and for what purposes – including the possibility of the butcher to be turned into dog food…?

No!  Nononono… I just couldn’t live with myself if that happened to her.

So I discussed the situation with Glow.  I told her what her owners had decided to do, what it would look like, and what the possible outcomes were.  She had dropped so much weight her ribs were showing and her coat was dull.  Because her physical condition had deteriorated after having been exiled to pasture all those months, it was doubtful a quality buyer would step up for her.

I told how I felt about her, and that I would like her to be my horse.  I explained what life with me would be like.  It would be VERY different from what she’d known so far.  She would become my riding horse.  She would have to be very patient with me while we learned new games.  We would try our hand at jumping, dressage (classical riding), trail riding, and whatever else we could find to do together that would be fun.

She would live at a barn with other horses.  And we would find a trainer to help us.  I told her that I hadn’t had a horse in my life in over 20 years. I hadn’t ridden a horse in a very long time, and that I needed her to take care of me.  Also, I had been very ill with Lyme disease for years, and wasn’t very strong.  I was in a lot of pain, and I was out of shape.  Even so, I promised her I would always do my very best to take care of her. I didn’t own a horse brush, hoof pick, a bridle or halter or any other horse gear, so we would be starting completely from scratch.

Moonglow’s Choice

After I shared my vision with her, I asked her if she wanted to come be with me… Or if she felt that there was another better person, place and purpose for her, or if she wanted to do something else, and if so, maybe I could help her do that?

She listened carefully, looking at me with those big brown eyes that saw through to my soul.  Then she came close to me and put her head in my arms.

And in that moment, tears sprung to my eyes and I cried into her beautiful mane.  I realized that we belonged together, and that I had just become a horse owner.  We had made our decision.

Next thing for me to do was gather my courage to explain to my husband who was NOT a horse lover that I was buying a retired race horse.  THAT was not a happy conversation. He made it clear he did not support me in any way, shape or form.

Somehow I found the money to proceed with our plan.  And bravely, together we began a grand and magical adventure based on a wonderful loving relationship, and had many joyful experiences together, before tragedy hit…Learn How to Talk with Animals

And that’s a tale for another day.

I hope you’re enjoying your animals, and that you remember to take the time to discuss things with them so they can understand.  That you take time to listen, carefully, to what they have to say.

It makes ALL the difference in the world, for them and you too.

My Horse Was a Nightmare… Until I Used Horse Communication

unnamedMy horse, Rose, is so mean to me.

“She bites me, steps on me, she won’t let me put her bridle on, and she turns her backside to me when I go in her stall.  Today, she ran away with me during our riding lesson.  I feel so embarrassed, and it was scary too!  Why is she acting this way?  I’m discouraged… and am so worried.  Help!!

Cindy was so upset, worried and frustrated she was in tears as she poured her heart out to me.

She said, “I always bring her treats, her favorites.  I give her all kinds of special attention.  I’ve spent a fortune buying the best saddle and equipment, and she’s had the very best trainers.  I don’t understand… why doesn’t she appreciate all I do for her?”

So what’s really going on when our animals behave like this?

Are they really so unappreciative of our care, love and concern?

Are they just trying to make our lives miserable?

Do they hate us and would rather go live with someone else?

To solve problems like this one, we need to stop a moment and reflect on much deeper issues.  The Human Animal BodyMind Connections principles tell us that animals often mirror us.  They reflect us on many levels.  They act out our stress and wounds, and carry our illnesses and diseases. 0

For instance, how does the person feel about themselves and their life?

Do they respect themselves, set clear boundaries, confidently show others how they want to be treated?

Do they feel heard in who they are?

Or do others constantly invalidate and intimidate them?

Are they afraid?

How are they sabotaging or undermining themselves, their dreams and goals… and even their relationship with their animal?

Remember that other Beings in our lives to serve us by reflecting back to us the lessons we are here to learn.  Many companion animals choose to spend their lives attempting to break through our barriers, help us heal and become reconnected with all Life.

Animals are sentient, intelligent, wise beings.  They are Angels, Teachers, Guides and Healers. They think, feel, wonder, and reason, and they certainly have their own viewpoints and beliefs.  There is so much we can teach each other when we speak the same language.

When we evolve enough to recognize, respect and revere them for who they truly are, they help us heal, evolve and grow and we become better people.

When we talked to Rose using horse communication, she told us that Cindy was too timid, scared of her own shadow and was seriously out of balance.  Parts of her energy field were missing entirely, leaving her muddled and insecure.

She meant well, but the bottom line was, Rose didn’t feel very safe with her.  Cindy gave away her power so much that Rose didn’t have a good leader to follow that she could trust.  Cindy hadn’t earned the mare’s respect or love.

Deep BodyTalk System healing for Cindy, enlightening discussions about Rose’s viewpoint and wisdom got us in the right direction at last.  Training guidance to help Cindy establish herself as a clear and confident horsewoman.  Synchronizing their hearts and minds so they could feel each other and dance as one, everything changed.

horse communication 2

Enrolling Rose as her teacher and partner, together they started enjoying an amazing, extraordinary relationship!

Rose and Cindy became renowned for the incredible things they could do together.  Other riders envied them their closeness, and the way Rose took care of Cindy even when Cindy messed up occasionally.  Rose’s big heart and good will showed in the loving, happy look in her big brown eyes.

A painful nightmare situation with a seriously unhappy potential ending became a dream come true due to the rider and horse communication.

Can you imagine what amazing things you can learn when you learn how to talk to animals?

Every animal lover can learn how to communicate with animals!  Yes, some students are better than others.  Some of us work harder at it than others.  With education, practice and guidance, anyone can experience the joy of talking with animals. Put into practice your dog, cat, or horse communication skills!

Learning to communicate telepathically helps us better understand the beings that share our lives, expands our understanding about the circle of life and our place in it.  And part of the fun of having animal partners in our lives is, after all, sharing life’s experiences from a variety of viewpoints.

And THAT is what the Heart School of Animal Communication®  and the Animal Talk Coaching & Mastery Club is all about!

BIG hugs to you and your Angels, Guides, Healers and Teachers disguised as animals

Horse Talk and The Remarkable Story of Freckles Kate

Guest post courtesy of Lisa Avery. The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the guest author and do not necessarily represent the views of Val Heart & Heart Communication Enterprises LLC.

A Story About Horse Talk

My husband and I went to look at Kate as a broodmare for our cutting horse breeding program.

We’d researched her pedigree and performance record, and she would be the best bred and nicest broodmare in our program.

We fell in love with her on the spot.

She was a big bay mare with a beautiful white star in the middle of her forehead, gorgeous big brown eyes, and strong bone and rippling muscles.

That day I promised my husband to sell 5 of the horses we had to pay for Kate so that I could bring her home… but shortly after that we were able to bring her home (along with her lifetime friend, Dot) without selling any horses.

And so Kate came to live with us.

She was eighteen years old and had been without a foal for a year or so, and we thought it might take her a while to actually conceive, so we started breeding her in April.

In May she showed as in season again, but when we took the stallion to her she wouldn’t stand for him, and an ultrasound confirmed our suspicion.  To our delight, she had taken on the first breeding.

We followed up with many more ultrasound examinations to be sure that all was progressing normally.

Our veterinarian even did fetal sexing to see that it was a filly, although he had a little difficulty because the tiny foals were lying directly on top of one another.

Thinking that there was just one foal, we were all so excited!

The next spring, in March, Kate gave birth to twin fillies, who didn’t survive the birth.

It was heartbreaking for all of us.

Having lost foals before, we felt the best thing was to get right back to it, so we gave Kate some rest and bred her again later that spring.

She took and all was well, until the fall, when she lost the foal. So the following year we bred her back.

She was in great health and conceived easily, just as the three times before. Into the fall she was really looking pregnant and settled and we were so excited, but again, she lost the foal.

We called our dear friend, teacher, animal communicator, and healer, Val Heart, to talk about Kate.

I told her that I felt very confused because by all appearances Kate was healthy and happy and actually looked pregnant.

So, we ‘touched in’ to talk to Kate together, and found Kate’s heart was still holding on to the twins that didn’t survive birthing.

My heart went out to her. Whenever we lose a horse we feel like we have lost a family member.  We all grieve.

So, Val and I talked about the situation and possible healing solutions, and together we came up with an idea.

The next day my husband and I took Kate to a special quiet grassy area with big pine trees, and we held a ceremony to help Kate’s fillies pass on, and to help Kate let go.

We gently explained to her that as she held those foals close she left no room for new life.

It was okay for her to let go of the fillies, that we were there with her, and that they were ready to go.

By holding onto these fillies she was holding sadness, and holding on to the past, and not allowing good things to come to her future.

Then we gently massaged her belly and made big sweeping motion (similar to birthing) from her belly to her flank, to her tail, and spoke about birthing the fillies and letting them go.

I could even see them playing at her feet, before they loped into the heavens together.

Kate could see them too.

Then she looked at us, took a deep breath, and started to peacefully graze.

The amazing thing here is how we could actually see the foals.

Allen and I could see them go, and we watched as her belly physically/energetically changed!

She became lighter physically and mentally, and her heart was happier and full of love again.

The next spring Kate conceived easily, and carried a beautiful, healthy filly to term for us.

She is now bred back again and living happily in our pasture with her other broodmare friends.

We are so thankful to Val Heart, and to Kate, and to all the angels who have helped us along the way.
