What are the biggest mistakes students make when they communicate with animals?
People ask me what the biggest mistakes students make are when they practice communicating with animals.
How do you know if you’re making mistakes when you try to talk to them? Hint: If your pet looks at you like this, you’re making mistakes. 😉
The First, and Biggest Mistake Communicators Make is…
The single biggest ‘mistake’ is being too hesitant and quitting before they’ve developed competence in their intuitive abilities.
Acting as if they only have limited shots: “I’ll practice communicating with 1 animal and see how it goes.”
If they don’t “get” anything right off the bat, immediately, then they quit.
If they DO get something, they are afraid to share what they got.
Why? Because they might have gotten it wrong.
Or they didn’t get as much as someone else who’s farther along in their training developing their abilities, so they feel discouraged.
Their not so helpful ego mind distracts them with thoughts like, “I can’t do this, I suck, I should give up and quit.”
Even worse, they listen to that nonsense instead of busting through it.
Or they don’t get prompt validation and confirming feedback from the pet’s person and without immediate gratification in the form of approval, they discourage themselves and abandon their efforts.
Or worse still is when they share and have lots of positive responses but having received just one negative response where they weren’t entirely accurate or didn’t have their message validated or confirmed 100%?
They freak out and cease sharing further messages, insights or impressions.
Newsflash: You are not going to run out of animals to practice communicating with, and hesitancy or quitting won’t help.
Each experience will teach you something to improve your abilities, but not if you quit.
You’ll do better with some practice communication sessions than others, for various reasons that may have absolutely nothing to do with you.
You’ll learn something important from every practice communication you do. Even if it’s a mistake which will teach you what not to do.
That’s why we have well over 300 animal teachers in our Animal Talk Coaching & Mastery Club community to choose from to practice with, including our Featured Animal Teacher of the Month.
Sometimes, you won’t get it right.
And sometimes, you will get it right!
Just because someone else got what you got or something different that what you intuited, is no reason not to share what you got too.
And just because you may not get immediate gratification in the form of validation or confirmation that you got it right doesn’t mean you should give up, or that you got it wrong either.
Set your intention to learn from your mistakes because they are your best teachers.
So, here’s the thing.
Unless you continue practicing with a wide variety of animals not your own so you can get proper feedback, you’ll never know when you did it right or went off track or made a mistake, and if you don’t do that?
You won’t grow your confidence or abilities to be a better communicator.
Mistake Number Two
The second mistake I see animal communicators make is the flaw of perfectionism.
I’m not suggesting you don’t do your best.
You absolutely should.
However, delaying sharing what you get from your communication practice because you’re not happy with what you think you did or are worried you didn’t do it perfectly or might have made a mistake is not acceptable.
Your perfectionist mind isn’t all it thinks it is.
Even if you fix all the mistakes (imaginary or otherwise), you may be making a whole lot of other errors you aren’t aware of.
Don’t be sloppy, but don’t be the reverse of it either.
When I first started communicating with animals in 1993 I missed things all the time. Gasp! 😯
Occasionally I NAILED it!
Knocked it out of the park! WOW!!!
I astonished even myself at how awesome the communication and teaching was.
But I’d never have known that if I was afraid to practice, speak up and share what I got from communicating with animals.
I wouldn’t be where I am today if I’d quit or didn’t heal my fears or tendency to be a perfectionist.
And Finally, the Third Mistake Animal Communicators Make.
The third mistake I see is beginners trying to communicate with your own pet before practicing with other people’s pets so you can get proper feedback.
Without proper feedback to become competent with your intuitive communication skills, with animals you don’t know or have history with?
You won’t be able to communicate with animals you have history with and cannot gain clarity or be objective.
That’s like a surgeon practicing on their family members and loved ones before making it through their first semester in training to be a doctor.
Not a great idea.
Why? Because you’re too close to your own pet.
They often mirror and reflect you. (I call that the Human Animal BodyMind Connection, and it’s a powerful thing few understand or know how to work with…)
You aren’t objective because you have a shared history together, and you have expectations and thoughts that get in your way.
Your emotions aren’t neutral so you cannot be a witness observer, especially if you have an agenda or checklist of problems you want to sort out or issues to resolve.
Let’s face it, if your goal is to solve or fix a problem with your pet, you need more advanced experience, practice, and training.
When you practice with other people’s pets in a safe loving community, you don’t know them.
You have a clean intuitive canvas to explore so you can discover what works, and how to get out of your own way.
When you know how to connect to communicate using a quiet still mind, the way I teach using Heart Wisdom Methods.
When you know how to access and use all your intuitive abilities, then yes, now is the time to refocus to communicating with your own pets.
Because then you’ll know exactly what to do, the steps of how it works, and will be able to facilitate a great conversation.
My Advice: Take imperfect action and practice communicating every day if you want to be a better animal communicator.
Be comfortable with a degree of unfinished conversations because often the best conversations go on for days, weeks and months. Even years as you go deeper into exploring and sharing life with each other.
With your communication practice, remember that there’s always the redo button, a chance to reboot and reconnect to try again, and the option to continue the conversation later to discover what you missed.
Including the option to take a time out to consider what you’re discovering, to connect with your inner Guidance and ask to be shown what you don’t know yet, and to process what’s been triggered for you that needs healing.
We have an entire Heart Wisdom Masterclass essential training series dedicated to avoiding mistakes, improving accuracy, and interpreting animal messages properly.
We have 2 entire courses on how to continue the conversation and go deeper by asking the right question in the right way to get the best results. (Those include Advanced Animal Talk Mastery and the Heart of the Conversation 7 Step Blueprint courses.)
We have an entire awesome series of intuition lessons and exercises that I personally created for my animal communication and healing students in the Animal Talk Coaching & Mastery Club.
Club members have access to me for expert coaching, mentoring, and guidance to improve your skills and correct mistakes in our Live Q&A and Masterclasses.
Ask yourself, did I make a mistake OR am I making a discovery?
Because it’s about discovering what works for you, what didn’t work, and when you make mistakes how to fix them so you can avoid making them in the future.
Do you wish you had access to an expert coach to guide you in improving your intuitive abilities faster?
What a great idea! Did you think of that all by yourself?? Because that is brilliant and the super smart way to go!
That’s exactly what I most love to do with my animal communication students in the Heart School of Animal Communication® , in the Animal Talk Coaching & Mastery Club, and in private 1 on 1 mentoring too.

- Nita said, “I’m so grateful for the incredible resources / Masterclass Series recordings…. totally spoilt for choice! I enjoyed the 3 classes on the paranormal, and have started on the Advanced Healing Techniques … going through them once before I go back to make notes… then I’m eager to move onto the others!”
- Tricia said, “I stumbled on your site through a list of animal communicators. Some held occasional live classes, others had recorded classes but no one else offered a live school. After taking two short term classes, I knew I needed an ongoing community to hone my skills. Your School provides that and so much more. I continue to be amazed at the depth and breadth of the information provided.”
- Penny said, “Wow. So much to be grateful for. I am celebrating this amazing community that I have recently joined. So encouraging and uplifting to be with others who are on the same page when it comes to this skill, and gifts we are developing.”
